From Cambodia To Timor-Leste: Ulrich Wagner’s Mission To Empower Students Through Education And Sport

Smnewstl.com-Dili, Timor-Leste – 2025 — What began as a diplomatic meeting in Phnom Penh has blossomed into a meaningful initiative to uplift youth in Timor-Leste. Ulrich Wagner, Vice Chairman of the Alexander Education Group and founder of the Vietnam-based edtech startup EXET.AI, met Ambassador Kupa in Cambodia in 2024 — a moment that would unexpectedly pave the way for a powerful new collaboration in one of Southeast Asia’s most underserved educational regions.

Through Ambassador Kupa, Wagner was introduced to Father Jolino Vieira, SDB, a devoted priest and community leader in Timor-Leste. Inspired by the priest’s commitment to his students and moved by the challenges facing the local school, Wagner and his company took immediate action — donating a fully equipped basketball court to the school. The goal: to bring joy, energy, and a space for physical training to the lives of young learners.

“For us, it’s not just about classrooms and textbooks,” said Wagner during the court’s inauguration. “It’s about creating a learning environment where students can thrive emotionally, physically, and intellectually.”

Wagner resides in Vietnam, where he leads EXET.AI, a newly launched online education platform with a bold mission — to make quality education more affordable and accessible, especially for underserved communities across Asia. Now, he’s turning that mission toward Timor-Leste.

Through partnerships with schools and local leaders, Wagner hopes to build a long-term collaboration aimed at enhancing educational infrastructure, digital access, and career development pathways for Timorese youth. “Our goal is to empower students with the skills and opportunities they need for a peaceful, successful future,” Wagner said. “We believe technology and human connection can work hand in hand to close the education gap.”

Father Jolino Vieira, SDB welcomed the initiative, calling it “a beautiful example of solidarity and hope.” For the students, the basketball court is more than a place to play — it’s a symbol of opportunity, and a promise that they are not alone in their pursuit of a better future.

As plans for broader educational support unfold, one thing is clear: the seeds of transformation can be planted in the most unexpected moments — even in a conversation far from home.
